Like-minded cactus and succulent enthusiasts began meeting in WA gardens and loungerooms long before they thought of forming a Society.
The first recorded use of the name Cactus and Succulent Society of Western Australia was in 1953, and it became an Incorporated Body on 26 April 1973.
The Society celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2023 and continues to grow in members, depth, and strength.
Along the way there have been several regional branches come and go (with Bunbury being the largest), and several Study Groups formed (of which the Stapeliad Study Group remains).
Communications have always been important to maintain the life and vibrancy of the Society. From a four-page newsletter produced on a Roneo Duplicator, through to a magazine created using more sophisticated specialized software, the introduction of email notices, the use of Social Media (a public CSSWA Facebook page, and the CSSWA Members’ Only Facebook Group), the introduction (and recent rejuvenation) of our website, and now a member’s OneDrive, staying in touch (with both members and other cactus and succulent enthusiasts) still remains a focus today.
… and there’s lots more to come!
